Talk:Abolition

I have something here that I hope will amount to a small project by the time we are through. I want people to write about historical, contemporary and future acts of abolition here. I want to see the sysops waxing lyrical about their intent to bring down CP, I want Users with sufficient knowledge on the subject to write about the abolition of alcohol Prohibition laws in America, etc etc. I want to see lots of links to other articles. Lets get busy and make this page our own.--Graham 16:54, 10 November 2007 (EST)

The "abolition of alcohol Prohibition laws in America"?
Would you be talking about the "Volstead act" or the repeal thereof? CЯacke® 17:04, 10 November 2007 (EST)

sure; if its been abolished, or if we want it abolished, I want it on this page.--Graham 17:07, 10 November 2007 (EST)

Essay Style[edit]

This article is very essayish. Does it belong here? Do we want to continue the "project"? Or just do a major rewrite on the slavery aspect? --Waiting for Godot 10:28, 29 July 2008 (EDT)

Hatchet Job[edit]

The creator of this article sounds like he/she would prefer it if the brits hadn't abolished slavery - at least then they would be content to constantly condemn western civilisation for eternity. This article is absolute nonsense. I may edit it in the near future. MarcusCicero (talk) 14:17, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Please do. Your erudition and Irish perspective should provide a far superior article - hey, it couldn't be worse! Jack Hughes (talk) 14:27, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
If you want to put in the effort, sure. At present it's a quasi-essay without any meaningful information, so it could also simply be deleted. Röstigraben (talk) 15:19, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Politics and rationalism collide... I agree with everything in the article but it's pure useless rhetoric. "...have done more to re-affirm Britain’s self-righteousness than any eminent pro-slavery activist..." what is that even supposed to mean? "...incapable of acknowledging the barbarity of their slave trading histories..." cut the slimy language and I'd be more with it. But yeah, a little more fact, more discourse and less excessively apologetic language is needed. I have never owned a slave so don't really enjoy being guilt tripped into apologising for it. I was mulling over writing an article about Catholic Emancipation. I'm about to read a biography of Daniel O'Connell so I'll see if I have the energy after that. MarcusCicero (talk) 16:13, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Written from an entirely British perspective?[edit]

What about abolitionism in the major slave states? Abolitionism in the U.S. and the Caribbean? Abolitionism later on in other slave states? This article does a fair job at bashing self-congratulatory Brits, but it says literally nothing about American and Caribbean Abolitionists. Most people were not Abolitionists. Most abolitionists were not anti-racists. But we get none of that here. — Unsigned, by: 73.25.110.186 / talk / contribs

Abolition of religion[edit]

I realize that a whole lot of it is antitheist edgelords, but I feel like the erasure-of-religion movement on Reddit needs to be acknowledged. Luigifan18 (talk) 01:08, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Why should Reddit anything be acknowledged? Carthage (talk) 01:12, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
Because it might put the religious crazies on edge, justify their persecution complex, and drive them to be more annoying than usual if it isn't denounced? Religion isn't the problem, fundamentalism is. Luigifan18 (talk) 01:39, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
